New School Meal Requirements
You may have heard that there are new requirements for school meals. Most of these new rules began the 2012-2013 school year. Biggest Changes:
• Students are required to have ½ cup of fruit or vegetables on their tray for the meal to count as a reimbursable meal. Anything less has to be paid for by the student as a la carte. We offer a variety of fruits and vegetables daily to give the students more selection.
• Portion sizes and recipes will be designed to meet the three specific age groups of : PreK-5, 6th-8th, and 9th-12th.
• New school meal requirements limit how much meat/meat alternative (cheese, yogurt, etc.) and grains we can offer. We must stay within the specified ranges for each age group. This means main entrees may not be as large as they have been. We are striving to make each meal something our students will enjoy.
• Half of all grains offered must be whole grain rich. We are serving many products which meet the requirements and are in the process of getting more.
• We must offer vegetables from the following groups each week: dark green, orange/red, and legumes. We’ve been working toward this goal by serving fresh veggies along with low-fat dressings.
• Schools have until the 2014-2015 academic year to meet the first level of sodium limits.
