On Tuesday, Nov. 2, high school students and staff at Waelder High School celebrated Dia de los Muertos – a traditional holiday that goes back to the Aztec roots of some at the school. Every Nov. 1 or 2, staff and students create ofrendas decorated with authentic sugar skulls, flowers, papeles picado, food, and photographs of loved ones who live on in memories. Mrs. Handy’s students decorate with projects from her Art class. Paraprofessional, Veronica Cruz and her husband, Miguel Cruz put together an ofrenda in Mr. Cruz’s classroom.
The Waelder High School boys basketball team has little time to bask in its No. 9 preseason state ranking as the team opens the season 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12 on the road against perennial 1A power McMullen County, which comes into the game ranked No. 5 in state.
